About the teacher training centre

IH Almaty is a large school, with centres in various neighbourhoods around the city.

Our school was approved by Cambridge Assessment English (former ESOL) to deliver CELTA in 2007, and later, in 2019, all DELTA Modules: M1, M2 and M3 were added to our range of international professional development courses.

In 2009 we received accreditation for running the IHCYLT-International House Certificate in Teaching Young Learners and Teens, and, since that time, we have been successfully training both novice and experienced teachers in delivering YL classes communicatively.

Our teachers teach general english courses for adults and younger learners, exam-classes, and business English courses for companies and executives.

How ever you would like to develop your teaching skills, there will be an opportunity at IH Almaty! Staff have the opportunity to move between different areas of the company, and academic and support staff have room for development and promotion. Teachers & trainers are encouraged to give seminars, write articles, conduct action research, etc, as part of their own CPD.

Come to Almaty to find ten differences between mountains and hills and do your CELTA or DELTA with an excellent international team of trainers!

What is the CELTA?

The CELTA is a TEFL qualification which prepares you to teach English as a foreign language. You don’t need any existing English language teaching experience or training. It’s usually a 4 or 5 week full time course (but you can also take it part time).

Standing up in front of a class for the first time is a daunting prospect, so you need to make sure you have the skills you need to teach effectively. The CELTA prepares you for the classroom in these ways:

  1. Taught sessions on methodology, lesson planning, language analysis and language skills. (In total, you’ll have 120 hours of input.)
  2. The opportunity to observe experienced teachers in a real-life language classroom situations – so you can see the different skills and techniques they use.
  3. Teaching yourself – with helpful and detailed feedback from your tutors.  This practical experience is invaluable when you start your first job.

You’ll have to complete some written assignments as well, but when it’s all successfully completed you’ll be ready for your first job and first students!

100% Online CELTA at IH Almaty

We’ve been running CELTA since 2007 and are very proud of being the first CELTA centre in Kazakhstan and Central Asia.

Currently, most of our courses are run online, thus making it easier for busy, working people to do. Each year we run at least five courses.

The 100% Online Full time CELTA runs

  • Monday-Friday for 5 weeks
  • 9 am-6 pm Almaty time (+6 GMT)

There will be one day off during the week starting with week two.

(For the intensive 4 week online CELTA in July, this is also Monday-Friday, but there are no days off!)

We’re proud of our international team of trainers and excellent feedback from the participants on both the trainers and the course organisation.

What will my fellow students be like?

Most of our CELTA students are over 30, and there is a mix of experienced and novice teachers. The majority are from cities across Kazakhstan, although in the last two years there have been more from Syria, Vietnam, Libya and Russia which makes the courses truly international.

In July the demand is high and we usually run two concurrent courses with 12 trainees in each CELTA course.

Tutors at this training centre

Aleksandra Kulikova

Aleksandra has worked on more than 50 CELTA courses in Kazakhstan, Thailand, and Singapore. She also delivers IH CAM and IH CYLT courses. Aleksandra's advice is that teacher training courses are often very intensive so try to free up your schedule of any other commitments as much as you can – you're going to thank yourself for it later!

Adam Besjovec

Adam has had a lifelong career in EFL teaching and teacher training. His advice, both for success on the course and success in your career, is to be open-minded and don’t be afraid to experiment – it’s all about the development

Branislava Jovanovic

Branislava has worked on CELTA and other teacher training courses since 2011 in Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkey, Mexico and Peru. About looking for your first job, she says find a job with a school that has a culture of continuous learning and take responsibility for your own professional development. Reflect, experiment, have fun!

James Harland

James worked in the non-profit sector before changing career to EFL teaching and teacher training. He advises his students to develop your own areas of specialist interest, and see where in the world that takes you. For me that has been business, academic and aviation English, and living in Germany and Kazakhstan, but you can find the mix of content and location to fit your own interests.

Zhanziya Sundetova

Zhanziya changed career to teaching and teacher training from finance and private equity. Her advice for an interesting and rewarding TEFL career is to never stop being curious. It is not only about using new methods and fun activities in class, but also getting to know the learners and cater for their interests and goals, so that the learning and teaching processes are mutually enjoyable and fruitful.

CELTA student testimonials

Online, no teaching experience, different time zone as I couldn’t travel to Almaty-I really wasn’t sure if I should do the CELTA course this summer.

But in the end, thanks to the support of IH InterPress and our great tutors it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

The course is challenging but extremely rewarding. You start teaching on the second day which initially feels completely crazy but with all the input you get it is made possible. And nothing feels better at the end of the day than knowing that not only you learned something but that you also taught someone something.

I can only recommend Celta if you want to advance your career. Stefania, online CELTA July 2021

The CELTA course was the best course I have ever had in my life. I had never imagined I could have my CELTA online and I am glad I chose IH Almaty. I loved how compassionate and encouraging my tutors were all through the course. They provided the most useful feedback to me and guided me with their insightful advice to improve my teaching skills. I recommend English teachers or anyone interested in gaining international qualification in TEFL to participate in this life-changing course as it will inspire you in your career greatly by delineating the path for you in its most professionally perfect way. E. Roozbahani, CELTA Online student, 18 Dec 2021

I took the course with the hope of improving as a teacher. It was an intensive course and required a lot of hard work and I'm really glad to have done the course. The tutors are amazing and I've learned a lot from them. M. Lalremtluanga, CELTA Online student, 18 Dec 2021
