The Trinity CertTESOL (Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) is an intensive initial TEFL qualification designed for people with little or no previous English language teaching experience or training. It provides the confidence and skills needed to teach English to adults effectively.
Recognition
The CertTESOL is certified by Trinity College London and recognised by Ofqual at Level 5 on the Qualifications and Credit Framework, making it highly regarded internationally. It is accepted by the British Council and all International House schools as an initial TEFL qualification, equivalent to the CELTA.

The CertTESOL is open to graduates seeking overseas teaching positions, career changers, and anyone who wants to teach English domestically or internationally. The course teaches candidates to teach English without using the students’ native language, enabling instruction across multilingual classrooms worldwide. No prior teaching experience is required.
Course Duration
The CertTESOL can be completed intensively over 4 weeks or part-time over up to one year.
Course Structure
The programme totals 130 hours and includes:
- Teaching methodology, lesson planning, language analysis and language skills input
- Observation of experienced teachers in real language classrooms
- 6 hours of observed and assessed teaching practice with actual language learners
- Written assignments based on course input
- Reflective journal writing, professional development and self-evaluation
Assessment
There is no final exam. Candidates are assessed continuously throughout the course. All courses are externally moderated by Trinity College London-appointed assessors.
