About the school and city

About the School

International House Bristol’s Teacher Training Centre is located in Clifton, one of Bristol’s most popular and elegant areas. Clifton is one of the oldest and most affluent areas in Bristol and is also home to Bristol University. There are also a number of shops and restaurants less than a minute’s walk away, so students can relax in a safe and friendly environment with all amenities close to the school.

With a warm and friendly atmosphere, IH Bristol is fully equipped with comfortable seating, interactive whiteboards, computers and free wi-fi access. There’s a students’ room with tea/coffee/snacks machines and a microwave and fridge so trainees can bring their own lunches. There is also a private garden.

Bristol is a city known for its artistic flair (home of the famous Banksy and Wallace and Gromit) and the centre at Queens Avenue has a new mural in its reception representing local culture, elements of Bristol’s landscape and architecture, and the city’s famous street art. We are proud to represent Bristol!

Life in and around Bristol

Surrounded by the hills of South West England, Bristol has a unique identity and is home to many artists, musicians and actors. It’s a university town with over 50,000 full time students. Bristol is compact enough to get around on foot, yet offers a huge variety of cultural activities, international restaurants, festivals and shopping. There are large parks in and around the city. Bristol was named as Britain’s Coolest City by The Sunday Times in 2017.

Bristol is close to some of the UK’s most popular attractions. In just 15 minutes by train, you could visit Bath, a UNESCO World Heritage site with its Georgian architecture and award-winning Roman Baths. A trip to the Southwest of England isn’t complete without visiting Stonehenge, exploring the history and cultural significance of this ancient stone circle.

Studying at IH Bristol

Bristol International Airport has flights to and from most European countries and from all over the world via Amsterdam Schiphol Airport. There is a frequent bus service from the airport which brings people into the very centre of the city. There are two train stations serving Bristol: Bristol Temple Meads and Bristol Parkway. From these stations it is possible to travel anywhere in the UK.

There is no underground metro system in Bristol, but all major bus routes pass within 25 metres of Queens Avenue, 2 minutes away from the school. Parking is not easy, although there are spaces if you are prepared to pay. We offer bicycle parking on the premises. It takes approximately 30 minutes to walk the 2.4km from Temple Meads Train Station to the school.

The coach station is approximately 15 minutes’ walk from Queens Avenue, 1.4 km.

IH Bristol is less than 2 minutes from Queens Road, which has many restaurants and cafes, two supermarkets (Sainsbury’s and Waitrose), banks, a chemist, shoe repair, clothing shops as well as bars and nightclubs. There is even a centre for massage after a strenuous day of teaching!

To give you an idea of the cost of living in Bristol, one kilo of apples costs around £1.60, a single bus ticket costs around £2.50 and a restaurant meal costs around £20.
