You must have a CELTA, Trinity TESOL, or equivalent initial teaching qualification Full mastery of English across all 4 skills to CEFR C2/IELTS band 8 required, evidenced by a high standard of written and spoken English throughout the application process. This applies to both native and non-native applicants. Preferred: the right to work within the EU. Following Brexit, British citizens may no longer automatically have this right, though we may assist in organising visas on a case-by-case basis. Job Description

We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated assistant director of studies who would like to join our dynamic team at IH Bydgoszcz, where we have been providing high quality lessons and teacher support for 30 years.

You are the ideal candidate if:

you already have at least four years of post-intial qualification experience and have a higher-level qualification, for example IH CAM, or at least one part of Cambridge Delta/Trinity DipTESOL. you have experience teaching a wide variety of ages and levels including young learners (preferably with the IHCYLT, TYLEC or equivalent). you have experience teaching Cambridge exams (B2: First and C1:Advanced). you have experience providing support to teachers, teacher training or other academic management tasks. you have a positive outlook, a flexible approach to problem solving, are well organised and have strong communication skills.

Assistant Director of Studies duties: Over half of your timetable will be dedicated to this part of your role and you will receive all of the necessary training and support. Along with the rest of the senior team, you will play a key role in providing the high standard of professional development that our school is known for, including running collaborative planning meetings, providing staffroom support, conducting observations, mentoring less experienced teachers and running workshops, including at our local conferences at IH Bydgoszcz and Torun. You will work closely with the Director of Studies to organise and run school social events and Cambridge mock exams (some of which take place on a Saturday), conduct placement testing, participate in the weekly senior meeting, and help teachers fulfill administrative requirements and reach their potential. When the DoS is absent, you will be responsible for the smooth running of the school, and you will be fully trained to enable you to do this. Extra duties include organising cover, assisting with timetabling and participating in job interviews.

Teaching: You will still be in the classroom regularly, teaching 12 hours (12x45min) a week of your own classes. This will be two groups with one or two 121s, covering a mix of ages and levels. You will also provide emergency cover, as required.

Benefits

Full-time ten-month contract, starting with a paid induction. Basic salary paid regardless of hours worked. Overtime and travel paid. Medical care using the Polish health care system or private medical insurance as applicable. Weekly survival Polish lessons.

Other Benefits

Flights: One return flight to Poland from within Europe to the value of approximately 600-800PLN each year. The refund for your flight to Poland is on arrival, with the return leg refunded on completion of the contract.

Accommodation: Shared fully-equipped accommodation provided by the school in a flat with another teacher, including utilities (not internet). All flats are within 25 minutes walking distance of the school. The school also covers flat deposits and estate agent fees for our flats. This is the equivalent of approximately 1,200 PLN per teacher per month.

Holiday: Regular holidays throughout the year, including two weeks at Christmas/New Year and two weeks in January/February, Easter and other national holidays. Approximately two weeks pro-rata holiday pay is paid at the end of the contract.

About the School

IH Bydgoszcz is situated in a four-storey art deco building only a few minutes walking distance from the Old Town, with a gym and a cinema next door to the school. Bydgoszcz is well-known for its beautiful parks, including one across the road from school and the largest city park in Poland a 10-minute tram ride away.

Operating since 1992, it is a well-established, quality-focused language school and a Cambridge English Exam Centre. The school enjoys an excellent reputation for its teaching quality and experience, recruiting highly-motivated teachers for whom professional development is a key and life-long priority. The school and its students enjoy free Wi-Fi, an Internet room, a snack bar and multimedia facilities in every classroom.

The team at the school take great care to help teachers settle in to their new life teaching English in Poland, supporting their health and wellbeing.

The school has about 23 teachers and 6 support and administrative staff. Teachers join a multinational staffroom with colleagues from the UK, Poland and other European countries. When they join most are newly qualified in their first or second year of teaching, and some have a little more experience. All teachers help and support each other – the teachers room is always buzzing in between classes! So a lot of teachers stay with IH Bydgoszcz for more than a year, more than two or even more than three years.

Life in and around Bydgoszcz

Bydgoszcz is a city of approximately 360,000 inhabitants and contains plenty of bars, restaurants, cinemas and concert halls. There are nice vegan and vegetarian restaurants, eating out is very affordable, and there is plenty within walking distance.

“Bydgoszcz’s architecture is beautiful and eye-catching with magnificent historical buildings. We have a theatre, philharmonic, opera and cinemas. There are shopping centres as well as small, local shops. In the centre of the city, there are three parks (one opposite IH) and there’s a great green area, a forest park called Myślęcinek, only a few minutes by tram from the city centre. You will meet a lot of foreigners in Bydgoszcz since there are a few international companies existing in the city.
