About the school and city

About the School

LSI IH Portsmouth, established in 1985, is located in a large building right in the centre of the university district of Portsmouth, the UK’s only island city. This vibrant university town has all the delights of a location with a large student population, with a rich cultural and historical heritage.

The school is a destination for students from all over the world, and with 25 classrooms offering General English courses, IELTS and exam preparation and teacher training, it’s usually a hive of activity.

Students and staff alike comment on the uniquely welcoming environment that makes LSI IH Portsmouth a wonderful place to study and work.

There is a strong teacher development ethos at the school, with a Director of Studies for Teacher Development, who is also a Distance DELTA local tutor, CELTA trainer and author of two popular IELTS course books.

Life in and around Portsmouth

Portsmouth is a lively university city, with around 20,000 university students. Due to the sunny climate, Portsmouth attracts and regularly hosts a number of festivals and events such as the Southsea Food Festival, the International Kite festival, and the Great South Run. The Victorious music festival (end of August) is now a leading event on the UK summer festival scene.

Portsmouth has a rich maritime history with its award-winning museums showing the remains of the Mary Rose, sunk in 1545 and recovered from the sea in 1982, to sailboats from the 1700s.

Portsmouth itself is on the south coast of the UK, near to the national parks of the South Downs and the New Forest, which offer miles of wild nature walks in unique countryside.

Studying at IH Portsmouth

We are based in the central university area, just a short walk from the main train station. The city is very flat, with lots of cycle paths, so that is a good option for getting to the school.

There are lots of international students, so everybody at the school benefits from a cosmopolitan atmosphere.

If you are travelling internationally, London’s Heathrow or Gatwick airports are equally convenient, or Southampton has a small international airport.

This video, narrated by a language student, give you an idea of what it’s like to study with us.

If you want us to help you find accommodation, we offer homestays, self catering student houses, or we can help you find a hotel or B&B in a good area near the school. Homestays and the student houses start from about £170 per week,
