About the school and city

About the School

International House Dublin is located in the heart of Dublin city centre, about a 10-minute walk from The Spire on O’Connell Street.

We moved to the current premises, in the Steelworks, in 2017. It’s a very modern, four-storey building, in a mixed-use residential and business complex with a quiet, leafy courtyard in the centre. The ground, first, second and third floors of the building are used for English language and teacher training classes and on the top floor of the building there is a café with a roof terrace and great views over the city.

Although in an English speaking country, walking around the classrooms at IH Dublin will feel very international as the majority of students are on medium or long term stays from Europe or further afield.

We are close to attractions such as the Epic Museum, the General Post Office (GPO museum) and the Hugh Lane Dublin City Art Gallery.

Life in and around Dublin

Dublin is a vibrant, lively, cosmopolitan and above all, a friendly city. With a thriving music scene and great restaurants, there’s always something going on and lots of things to see and do. The centre is small, easy to navigate and this means that you can feel “at home” in Dublin very quickly. Students love the nightlife here, meeting people from all over the world and generally immersing themselves in the life of the city; Irish culture and hospitality is rightly world-famous.

At the weekend, it’s so easy to hop on the DART out to Howth or Bray, or if you want to go a bit further afield, you can get to places like Galway, Belfast or Cork within about 3 hours.

Studying at IH Dublin

Getting to IH Dublin is easy. Dublin Airport is an international airport served by many major airlines. The school is a 5-minute walk from Connolly Station so very accessible by the local commuter train in Dublin (The DART) either from north or south of the city. There are two tram lines in Dublin: the Red Line, which comes from the west of the city, and the Green Line, which comes from the south of the city. The Red Line tram stops at Busaras (the central bus station), which is a 5-minute walk from IH Dublin. The Green Line stops at O’Connell Street, which is a 10-minute walk from the school or you can transfer to the Red Line at Abbey Street and travel one stop to the Busaras stop. The school is also served by the 14, 14c, 15,27, 27a, 29a, 31, 31a, 31 b, 32, 42, 43 and 53 bus routes, all of which stop on Amiens Street, about 5 minutes from the school.

There is a café on the fourth floor of IH Dublin that is open from 08.00 – 15.00. It serves teas, coffees, croissants etc in the morning and both hot and cold meals at lunchtime. The local supermarkets to school are Supervalu on Talbot Street (a 5-minute walk), Tesco also on Talbot Street (a 7-minute walk), and Dunne’s Stores on North Earl Street (about a 10-minute walk). About 15 minutes from the school, there is also the Jervis Centre which has many shops, including Marks and Spencer, Topshop, Next and Argos.

Dublin is not an expensive city, although it is the capital of Ireland. To give you an idea of how expensive it is to live in Dublin, a kilo of oranges is around €2.50, a Big Mac is currently €3.64 and a bottle of beer in a bar is €4.

The school arranges lots of accommodation for teacher training students and language students, so there is an entire accommodation department. We can help with arranging a host family or self catering apartments. Depending on time of year and the size of apartment you would like, prices vary from €230 – €330 per week. You could also book a hotel, but because Dublin is very popular with tourists at all times of the year it may be easier to book accommodation through the school. Either which way, we are here to help!
