What is DELTA

DELTA (Diploma in teaching English to speakers of other languages) covers advanced theory and practice to help you develop in your teaching career. You need at least one year’s experience to make the most of it.

There are three modules, which you can take in any order.

Module 1 is “Understanding Language, Methodology and Resources for Teaching”. This is the examined module, and is primarily theoretical.

Module 2 is “Developing Professional Practice”.  It is assessed with a portfolio of coursework and assessed lesson observations.

Module 3 is independent research on either an ELT specialism or management.  It is assessed by a written dissertation.

For more detail about DELTA and all the modules, read our full guide here.

Nora Musa

I have been a full time EFL teacher since 2003 and a teacher trainer since 2006.
My advice is to always try and continue to learn and refresh / update your skills, be it technology, ideas or techniques. If you are lucky enough to be in a school that has teacher development sessions, opportunities to observe others and to try different contexts, take them. It makes for a more interesting career.
Learn from your students, involve them as much as you can and don’t be afraid to try different things.

Frequently Asked Questions

I'm worried about the high cost of living in central London during the face-to-face modules. Can IH London help me find affordable accommodation?
Yes, we offer assistance with finding accommodation, including homestays and halls of residence with single en-suite rooms and studios. You should budget between £200 and £435 a week depending on your preference. Additionally, our Covent Garden location has nearby supermarkets where you can grab a meal deal lunch for £3.00, and our on-site café provides fresh, affordable food daily.
Why should I choose to do my DELTA at IH London rather than another training centre?
IH London is the number one language school in Central London according to British Council inspections, and our classrooms actually saw the very first CELTA courses in the 1960s. We train over 500 new teachers every year and are a leading contributor in the ELT field. Studying your DELTA with us means learning at a highly respected charitable trust with a deep, historic connection to Cambridge English teacher training.
How does the 'Online & F2F' format work for the Full DELTA Diploma, and will I need to commute to the centre every day?
The blended format allows you to complete certain modules and theoretical coursework online while attending our Covent Garden centre for your intensive face-to-face teaching practice. When you do need to be on-site, commuting is incredibly easy as we are just minutes from the Covent Garden and Holborn tube stations. If you are traveling from abroad for the in-person components, we are also easily accessible from major airports and the Eurostar.
Do I have enough teaching experience to enroll in the Full DELTA Diploma?
The DELTA is an advanced Cambridge qualification designed for experienced English language teachers who want to progress to senior or management roles. You will generally need at least one year of full-time teaching experience (post-CELTA or equivalent) across a variety of learner levels. When you apply, our training team will review your teaching background to ensure this rigorous diploma is the right step for your career.
