What is the CELTA?

The CELTA is a TEFL qualification which prepares you to teach English as a foreign language. You don’t need any existing English language teaching experience or training. It’s usually a 4 or 5 week full time course (but you can also take it part time). Standing up in front of a class for the first time is a daunting prospect, so you need to make sure you have the skills you need to teach effectively. The CELTA prepares you for the classroom in these ways:
1. Taught sessions on methodology, lesson planning, language analysis and language skills. (In total, you’ll have 120 hours of input.)
2. The opportunity to observe experienced teachers in a real-life language classroom situations – so you can see the different skills and techniques they use.
3. Teaching yourself – with helpful and detailed feedback from your tutors. This practical experience is invaluable when you start your first job.
You’ll also complete a few written assignments, and then you’ll be ready for your first job and your first students.

Nora Musa

I have been a full time EFL teacher since 2003 and a teacher trainer since 2006.
My advice is to always try and continue to learn and refresh / update your skills, be it technology, ideas or techniques. If you are lucky enough to be in a school that has teacher development sessions, opportunities to observe others and to try different contexts, take them. It makes for a more interesting career.
Learn from your students, involve them as much as you can and don’t be afraid to try different things.

Will taking this CELTA at IH London actually help me get a teaching job?
Yes, absolutely. Three out of four English language teaching jobs specifically require a CELTA qualification, making it the global gold standard for TEFL employers. Because it is awarded by Cambridge Assessment English, graduating from IH London will give you a highly regarded, internationally recognised credential to start your career.
Do I need to be a native English speaker or have prior teaching experience to enroll?
You do not need to be a native speaker to take the CELTA at IH London, provided you have a high level of English proficiency to support your learners. Additionally, no prior teaching experience is required to join the course. It is designed to train you from the ground up, giving you all the practical skills you need to become an effective English language teacher.
Can I work my regular job while completing my CELTA training?
If you choose our intensive full-time CELTA format, we strongly advise against working alongside it, as the daily training and lesson planning require your complete focus. However, IH London also offers part-time options designed specifically to accommodate working professionals. We recommend reviewing our available course schedules to find a format that best fits your current commitments.
How will my teaching be assessed, and is there a massive final exam I need to pass?
There is no final written exam for the CELTA qualification. Instead, you are assessed continuously throughout your time at IH London based on your real-world teaching practice with actual students and a series of practical written assignments. Your tutors will provide ongoing, constructive feedback to ensure you meet the Cambridge Assessment English standards by the end of the course.
