Job Description

We are seeking dedicated and passionate English teachers to join our team of approximately 30 teachers for the upcoming 2025/26 academic year commencing in September 2025.

As an English teacher at IH Santiago de Compostela, known locally as “El Centro Británico”, you will have the opportunity to teach a diverse range of students and classes, including young learners, teenagers, adults, and exam preparation courses. We provide a nurturing teaching environment and prioritize teacher growth. Our contracted hours include a weekly two-hour teacher meeting, where we explore various pedagogical areas and invite all of our teachers to participate. Additionally, our CPD programme encompasses frequent observations, peer and self-evaluations, performance appraisals, lesson planning support, conferences, and more.

As one of the largest authorized Cambridge English exam centers in the region, you will have the chance to expand your knowledge of language testing.

At El Centro Británico, we take pride not only in our teaching but also our facilities. We have invested significantly in ensuring that all of our classrooms are equipped with the latest technology, allowing for innovative teaching methods and approaches.

The ideal candidate would possess the ability to inspire, manage, and motivate students, work well within a team, show initiative, and have a proactive and positive attitude towards teaching, students, and colleagues. Effective and efficient communication skills, a comprehension of clients’ needs and expectations, a commitment to professional development, good administrative skills, at least one year of teaching experience, and a positive inclination towards working with young learners and teenagers would be highly advantageous.

I really appreciate the support of my colleagues and management, the small class sizes and the opportunity to learn and share ideas with teachers every week and I feel I have really improved as a teacher during my time at El Centro Británico.
Santiago is a nice sized city with everything you need. There is a great vibe in the old town and the food is amazing!

About the school and city

About the School

IH Santiago de Compostela – El Centro Britanico is a well-established and prestigious English language academy located in Santiago de Compostela, a beautiful part of Galicia, Spain.

We started teaching English in 1979 in the centre of Santiago, and later expanded to the nearby suburbs of Milladoiro and Bertamiráns. The team of about 35 teachers and staff deliver teacher training, language clases, exams, and summer camps.

With academic experience built up over forty years, and a dedication to introducing innovative pedagogical techniques, we are proud that our teachers create such good rapport with all their students and enjoy a very positive learning environment.

We believe our location, experience as an English Language institution, employment opportunities, and our passion for teacher training makes us a great choice for a CELTA course.

Life in and around Santiago de Compostela

Santiago de Compostela is rapidly growing in popularity with both tourists and prospective employees, owing to its appeal as a vibrant student city and its surrounding landscapes. If you walk the Camino, you will be heading for Santiago!

Santiago de Compostela is an excellent choice for the CELTA candidate as it provides affordable living costs, as well as very attractive advantages, such as: a rich cultural offering, world famous cuisine and wine, UNESCO world heritage site and one of Spain’s oldest universities.

You can visit the well-known Costa da Morte, passing by Fisterra or staring at the setting sun in Rías Baixas (southern coast of Galicia); visiting cosmopolitan cities such as Vigo or A Coruña, tasting Barack Obama’s favourite wines in Ribeira Sacra or enjoying a thermal bath as an ancient Roman… all of them could be the perfect plan to have at the weekend.

Studying at IH Santiago de Compostela

Santiago is the biggest city in the north west of Spain, and is very well served by fast trains connecting to major Spanish cities. There is a small international airport which is expanding its connections.

To get to the school, both the train station and some bus stops are less than a five-minute walk away. For those who would prefer to drive, there is a car park in front of the centre.

Galician gastronomy is getting a name for itself, and we think its the best in Spain! From our melt in mouth octopus to Queixo de Tetilla cheese (named because it is reminiscent of a small breast!), we have some truly unique local dishes. The school is surrounded by plenty of places where you can taste our delicious food. It’s also practical living here, and the school is next to local supermarkets such as Gadis and Carrefour.

We will help students find suitable accommodation, either in a shared flat, individual flat, or inn/hotel. The cost of a shared flat is from €200 per week.
