What is the CELTA?

The CELTA is a TEFL qualification which prepares you to teach English as a foreign language. You don’t need any existing English language teaching experience or training. It’s usually a 4 or 5 week full time course (but you can also take it part time). Standing up in front of a class for the first time is a daunting prospect, so you need to make sure you have the skills you need to teach effectively. The CELTA prepares you for the classroom in these ways:
1. Taught sessions on methodology, lesson planning, language analysis and language skills. (In total, you’ll have 120 hours of input.)
2. The opportunity to observe experienced teachers in a real-life language classroom situations – so you can see the different skills and techniques they use.
3. Teaching yourself – with helpful and detailed feedback from your tutors. This practical experience is invaluable when you start your first job.
You’ll also complete a few written assignments, and then you’ll be ready for your first job and your first students.

Almaty, once the capital of Kazakhstan, is a vibrant city in a multi-ethnic multi-lingual country. Its people are hospitable, welcoming and interesting.

The landscape boasts some of the most breath-taking natural beauty to be seen anywhere, and there is something to suit every taste. Spanning two time zones, Kazakhstan is situated in the heart of Eurasia rich in landscape with deserts, steppes, savannas, wild forests, pristine lakes and rivers, mountains and glaciers.

Almaty nestles at the foot of the Tien Shan mountains which are a natural paradise with deep canyons, abundant wildlife like snow leopards and bears. You may also enjoy the ski resorts and ice skating with the locals. The best time to visit is between April and October, when the weather is warm, and you can easily visit most of the mountain sites: Big Almaty Lake, Butakovski y Waterfalls, Medeu, Chimbulak, Charyn Canyon, Kolsay and Kayandy picturesquare surroundings.

Recent economic wealth means that the city of Almaty is modern and highly developed, giving an interesting contrast of mid 20th Century history to a modern independent country. Many of the best places in Almaty are in the centre and within walking distance from each other. You can enjoy the best natural goods at the Green Bazaar, relax on a sunny day in the shadows of pine trees in Panfilov’s park and learn about the history and culture in Almaty Museum.

“For me, one of the most pleasant and surprising things in Almaty was an amazing cafe scene. There were so many good cafes and coffee shops with reasonable prices and a great selection of food and drinks, including local cuisine and international. I wish I could have more time to explore Almaty, and check all cool places Almaty has for tourists” Agnieszka, CELTA student and traveller, 2019

Zhanziya Sundetova

Zhanziya changed career to teaching and teacher training from finance and private equity. Her advice for an interesting and rewarding TEFL career is to never stop being curious. It is not only about using new methods and fun activities in class, but also getting to know the learners and cater for their interests and goals, so that the learning and teaching processes are mutually enjoyable and fruitful.

Branislava Jovanovic

Branislava has worked on CELTA and other teacher training courses since 2011 in Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkey, Mexico and Peru. About looking for your first job, she says find a job with a school that has a culture of continuous learning and take responsibility for your own professional development. Reflect, experiment, have fun!

James Harland

James worked in the non-profit sector before changing career to EFL teaching and teacher training. He advises his students to develop your own areas of specialist interest, and see where in the world that takes you. For me that has been business, academic and aviation English, and living in Germany and Kazakhstan, but you can find the mix of content and location to fit your own interests.

Aleksandra Kulikova

Aleksandra has worked on more than 50 CELTA courses in Kazakhstan, Thailand, and Singapore. She also delivers IH CAM and IH CYLT courses. Aleksandra’s advice is that teacher training courses are often very intensive so try to free up your schedule of any other commitments as much as you can – you’re going to thank yourself for it later!

Will getting my CELTA at IH Almaty actually help me find a teaching job abroad?
Yes, the CELTA is considered the gold standard in TEFL and is the world's most widely-recognised English teaching qualification. In fact, three out of four English language teaching jobs globally require a CELTA qualification. Because it is awarded by Cambridge Assessment English, employers worldwide will highly regard your certification from IH Almaty.
Do I need to be a native English speaker to take the CELTA course with IH Almaty?
No, you do not need to be a native speaker to enroll in our CELTA program. The course is open to anyone with a high level of English proficiency who wants to teach English to speakers of other languages. Your language skills and teaching potential are what matter most to our tutors at IH Almaty.
Can I continue working my full-time job while taking the CELTA course?
If you choose the intensive four-week CELTA format at IH Almaty, it is a highly demanding full-time commitment, so we strongly advise against working simultaneously. The course requires significant hours for live teaching practice, lesson planning, and written assignments. If you need to balance your studies with a job, we recommend inquiring about our part-time course options.
How will I be assessed during my CELTA training, and is there a massive final exam?
There is no final written exam for the Cambridge CELTA qualification. Instead, you are continuously assessed throughout your time at IH Almaty based on your real-life teaching practice with actual students and a series of practical written assignments. This hands-on approach ensures you are fully prepared to step into a classroom the moment you graduate.
