What is the CELTA?

The CELTA is a TEFL qualification which prepares you to teach English as a foreign language. You don’t need any existing English language teaching experience or training. It’s usually a 4 or 5 week full time course (but you can also take it part time). Standing up in front of a class for the first time is a daunting prospect, so you need to make sure you have the skills you need to teach effectively. The CELTA prepares you for the classroom in these ways:
1. Taught sessions on methodology, lesson planning, language analysis and language skills. (In total, you’ll have 120 hours of input.)
2. The opportunity to observe experienced teachers in a real-life language classroom situations – so you can see the different skills and techniques they use.
3. Teaching yourself – with helpful and detailed feedback from your tutors. This practical experience is invaluable when you start your first job.
You’ll also complete a few written assignments, and then you’ll be ready for your first job and your first students.

Will getting my CELTA at IH Bratislava actually help me find a teaching job?
Yes, taking this course is considered the gold standard for securing a job in TEFL. In fact, three out of four English language teaching jobs globally require a CELTA qualification. Because it is awarded by Cambridge Assessment English, employers worldwide highly regard the certificate you will earn with us.
Do I need to be a native English speaker or have prior teaching experience to take the CELTA with IH Bratislava?
Not at all. The CELTA is specifically designed for candidates with little or no previous teaching experience who want to start a life-changing career in education. You also do not need to be a native speaker, provided you have a high enough level of English proficiency to teach effectively.
How intense is the course, and can I continue working my regular job while studying?
The intensive CELTA format is highly demanding and requires a full-time commitment to coursework, lesson planning, and teaching practice. If you are currently working full-time, we strongly recommend looking into a part-time course option to ensure you can manage the workload. Successfully earning this Cambridge qualification requires significant dedication both inside and outside of training hours.
How will I be assessed during the course, and is there a massive final exam I have to pass?
There is no single final written exam for the CELTA. Instead, you are continuously assessed throughout your time at IH Bratislava based on your real-world teaching practice and a series of practical written assignments. This continuous approach ensures you are fully prepared and confident to step into an English language classroom upon graduation.
