What is the CELTA?

The CELTA is a TEFL qualification which prepares you to teach English as a foreign language. You don’t need any existing English language teaching experience or training. It’s usually a 4 or 5 week full time course (but you can also take it part time). Standing up in front of a class for the first time is a daunting prospect, so you need to make sure you have the skills you need to teach effectively. The CELTA prepares you for the classroom in these ways:
1. Taught sessions on methodology, lesson planning, language analysis and language skills. (In total, you’ll have 120 hours of input.)
2. The opportunity to observe experienced teachers in a real-life language classroom situations – so you can see the different skills and techniques they use.
3. Teaching yourself – with helpful and detailed feedback from your tutors. This practical experience is invaluable when you start your first job.
You’ll also complete a few written assignments, and then you’ll be ready for your first job and your first students.

Málaga is the largest city on the Spanish Costa del Sol and enjoys a typical Mediterranean climate. As its name suggests, you can pretty much guarantee sun here – it’s one of the sunniest cities in Europe with an average of 300 days of sunshine per year.

As well as sun and sea it also has all the conveniences of a cosmopolitan city. If you love history, art, culture, music, food, you’ll find something to interest you here. In the old city there are some genuinely interesting historical and cultural attractions, and since it’s the birthplace of Picasso there are plenty of art galleries.

All in all, if you want to be based in a safe city with lots of things to do and many things to see, then Málaga is the place for you.

First things first : there are many ways to get into Málaga. The city has its own airport (aeropuerto Málaga-Costa del Sol), as well as a large train/bus station (Vialia / Estación de María Zambrano) and bus lines to reach the city centre.

Málaga has a metro system and an extensive bus network. The city has also a bicycle and electronic scooter system.

But when at the school, everything you need is within walking distance. The coffee shop Bella Julieta is located down stairs and offers breakfast and lunch, sandwiches, beverages and many other delicious homemade snacks for very reasonable prices. The nearest supermarket is Carrefour Express at just 3 minutes walking distance from our school.

We also offer a cultural programme every week. This programme consists of excursions, sightseeing tours, films, cookery classes and so on. The excursions are on weekends and the popular destinations are Granada, Córdoba, Nerja, Ronda, Marbella etc. You can find the exact dates and times of these different activities on our website and in our reception.

Claire Potter

I worked as an EFL teacher for 9 years before becoming a teacher trainer, which I have done for 18 years. I previously worked in insurance, accounting, and in the civil service.

I hope that my CELTA trainees realise what a rewarding profession teaching can be. I hope that they are able to continue to develop as teachers, whilst possibly experiencing a different country, a different culture, and a different language, ensuring their personal growth too.

Will getting my CELTA at CLIC IH Malaga actually help me find a teaching job abroad?
Absolutely. Three out of four English language teaching jobs worldwide specifically require a CELTA qualification, making it the gold standard in the TEFL industry. Because it is awarded by Cambridge Assessment English, employers globally recognize and highly regard the certification you will earn with us.
Do I need prior teaching experience or to be a native English speaker to enroll in this course?
No prior teaching experience is required to start your CELTA journey at CLIC IH Malaga. You also do not need to be a native speaker, provided you have a high level of English proficiency (typically a strong C1 or C2) to effectively teach and manage a classroom. Our trainers will guide you through the teaching practice regardless of your starting point.
Am I graded entirely on a massive final exam at the end of my training in Malaga?
There is no final written exam for the CELTA. Instead, you are continuously assessed throughout the course based on your practical teaching sessions and a series of written assignments. Our tutors at CLIC IH Malaga provide regular, constructive feedback to help you meet the Cambridge Assessment English standards step by step.
Can I keep working my full-time job while taking the CELTA at CLIC IH Malaga?
If you choose our intensive four-week format, the workload is highly demanding and we strongly advise against working alongside it. The course requires full-time attendance for input sessions and teaching practice, plus evenings and weekends for lesson planning and assignments. If you need to maintain your job, we recommend inquiring about our part-time CELTA options to better balance your schedule.
