What is the CELTA?

The CELTA is a TEFL qualification which prepares you to teach English as a foreign language. You don’t need any existing English language teaching experience or training. It’s usually a 4 or 5 week full time course (but you can also take it part time). Standing up in front of a class for the first time is a daunting prospect, so you need to make sure you have the skills you need to teach effectively. The CELTA prepares you for the classroom in these ways:
1. Taught sessions on methodology, lesson planning, language analysis and language skills. (In total, you’ll have 120 hours of input.)
2. The opportunity to observe experienced teachers in a real-life language classroom situations – so you can see the different skills and techniques they use.
3. Teaching yourself – with helpful and detailed feedback from your tutors. This practical experience is invaluable when you start your first job.
You’ll also complete a few written assignments, and then you’ll be ready for your first job and your first students.

I decided to do the Celta course because I wanted to pursue English teaching as a career, but didn’t have any experience in the classroom. After completing this course, I feel that I have not only gained the experience I wanted, I have also acquired skills that will allow me to continue to learn and grow as a teacher. I have gained foundation skills that have given me confidence in my ability to lead classes. This experience has shaped me as a teacher in many, many ways, and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking at doing their CELTA qualification. Victoria

Studying at IH Seville

There are many ways to get to and around Seville. The city has its own airport (aeropuerto San Pablo), as well as a large train station (Estación de Santa Justa) and bus lines (Estación Prado de San Sebastián or Estación Plaza de Armas).

Seville has also a tram service in the city centre, metro system and an extensive bus network and bicycle and electronic scooter hire. But everything you need is in walking distance if you prefer that!

The school cafeteria, situated in the main patio of the school. offers breakfast and lunch, sandwiches, beverages, fresh fruit and salads and many other delicious homemade snacks and meals. There is also a El Corte Inglés supermarket just across the road.

If you want to know how much it costs to stay here, a kilo of oranges will cost about €2 per kilo, a Big Mac €5, and a bottle of beer in a local bar €4. But we hope that you will try and enjoy all out lovely Spanish cuisine!

Three out of four English language teaching jobs require a CELTA qualification* making this course the gold standard if you want a job in TEFL. The CELTA (Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) is the world's most widely-recognised qualification for teaching English. Will getting my CELTA at IH Seville actually help me find a teaching job abroad?
Yes, absolutely. Three out of four English language teaching jobs worldwide specifically require a CELTA qualification, making it the gold standard in the TEFL industry. Because it is awarded by Cambridge Assessment English, employers globally highly regard the certificate you earn with us, opening doors to a life-changing career.
Do I need to be a native English speaker or have prior teaching experience to take the CELTA course?
You do not need to be a native speaker or have any previous teaching experience to enroll at IH Seville. The CELTA is designed for beginners, provided you have a high level of English proficiency (typically C1 or C2) to effectively teach and complete the coursework. Our trainers will guide you through all the necessary teaching methodologies from day one.
How will I be assessed during my time at IH Seville, and is there a massive final exam?
There is no final written exam for the CELTA. Instead, you are continuously assessed on your practical teaching practice with real students and a series of written assignments completed throughout the course. This hands-on approach ensures you graduate from IH Seville fully prepared and confident to step into a real classroom.
Can I continue working my full-time job while completing the intensive CELTA course?
If you choose the full-time CELTA at IH Seville, we strongly advise against working alongside it. The course is highly intensive, requiring full daily attendance plus evenings and weekends dedicated to lesson planning and written assignments. If you need to maintain your employment, we recommend looking into our part-time CELTA format.
