What is the CELTA?

The CELTA is a TEFL qualification which prepares you to teach English as a foreign language. You don’t need any existing English language teaching experience or training. It’s usually a 4 or 5 week full time course (but you can also take it part time). Standing up in front of a class for the first time is a daunting prospect, so you need to make sure you have the skills you need to teach effectively. The CELTA prepares you for the classroom in these ways:

1. Taught sessions on methodology, lesson planning, language analysis and language skills. (In total, you’ll have 120 hours of input.)

2. The opportunity to observe experienced teachers in a real-life language classroom situations – so you can see the different skills and techniques they use.

3. Teaching yourself – with helpful and detailed feedback from your tutors. This practical experience is invaluable when you start your first job.

You’ll also complete a few written assignments, and then you’ll be ready for your first job and your first students.

I decided to do the Celta course because I wanted to pursue English teaching as a career, but didn’t have any experience in the classroom. After completing this course, I feel that I have not only gained the experience I wanted, I have also acquired skills that will allow me to continue to learn and grow as a teacher. I have gained foundation skills that have given me confidence in my ability to lead classes. There are many ways to get to and around Seville. The city has its own airport (aeropuerto San Pablo), as well as a large train station (Estación de Santa Justa) and bus lines (Estación Prado de San Sebastián or Estación Plaza de Armas).

Seville has also a tram service in the city centre, metro system and an extensive bus network and bicycle and electronic scooter hire. But everything you need is in walking distance if you prefer that!

The school cafeteria, situated in the main patio of the school. offers breakfast and lunch, sandwiches, beverages, fresh fruit and salads and many other delicious homemade snacks and meals. There is also a El Corte Inglés supermarket just across the road.

If you want to know how much it costs to stay here, a kilo of oranges will cost about €2 per kilo, a Big Mac €5, and a bottle of beer in a local bar €4. But we hope that you will try and enjoy all out lovely Spanish cuisine!
