What is the CELTA?

The CELTA is a TEFL qualification which prepares you to teach English as a foreign language. You don’t need any existing English language teaching experience or training. It’s usually a 4 or 5 week full time course (but you can also take it part time). Standing up in front of a class for the first time is a daunting prospect, so you need to make sure you have the skills you need to teach effectively. The CELTA prepares you for the classroom in these ways:
1. Taught sessions on methodology, lesson planning, language analysis and language skills. (In total, you’ll have 120 hours of input.)
2. The opportunity to observe experienced teachers in a real-life language classroom situations – so you can see the different skills and techniques they use.
3. Teaching yourself – with helpful and detailed feedback from your tutors. This practical experience is invaluable when you start your first job.
You’ll also complete a few written assignments, and then you’ll be ready for your first job and your first students.

Will getting my CELTA at IH Cairo actually improve my job prospects in TEFL?
Yes, the CELTA is widely considered the gold standard for teaching English and will significantly open up your career possibilities. According to Cambridge Assessment English, three out of four English language teaching jobs require a CELTA qualification. Because it is a globally recognized qualification from the University of Cambridge, employers in Egypt and abroad highly regard it.
Do I need to be a native English speaker or have previous teaching experience to enroll?
Not at all! You do not need to be a native speaker, nor do you need any prior teaching experience to take the CELTA at IH Cairo. You simply need an advanced level of English proficiency and a standard educational background to get started. The course is designed to train you from the ground up to start a life-changing career helping students.
Can I continue working my full-time job while completing my CELTA training?
If you choose the intensive four-week CELTA format at IH Cairo, we strongly advise against working alongside it due to the rigorous schedule of seminars, lesson planning, and teaching practice. However, if you need to maintain your employment, part-time formats are often available to spread the workload over several months. We recommend discussing your current schedule with our admissions team to find the best fit.
How will I be assessed during the course, and is there a difficult final exam I have to pass?
There is no massive final written exam to worry about. Instead, you are continuously assessed throughout your time at IH Cairo based on your practical teaching sessions and a series of practical written assignments. This hands-on approach ensures you are evaluated on your real-world ability to manage a classroom rather than just your test-taking skills.
