What is the CELTA?

The CELTA is a TEFL qualification which prepares you to teach English as a foreign language. You don’t need any existing English language teaching experience or training. It’s usually a 4 or 5 week full time course (but you can also take it part time). Standing up in front of a class for the first time is a daunting prospect, so you need to make sure you have the skills you need to teach effectively. The CELTA prepares you for the classroom in these ways:
1. Taught sessions on methodology, lesson planning, language analysis and language skills. (In total, you’ll have 120 hours of input.)
2. The opportunity to observe experienced teachers in a real-life language classroom situations – so you can see the different skills and techniques they use.
3. Teaching yourself – with helpful and detailed feedback from your tutors. This practical experience is invaluable when you start your first job.
You’ll also complete a few written assignments, and then you’ll be ready for your first job and your first students.

About this Course - CELTA with IH Huelva

What Is CELTA?

The CELTA (Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) is an intensive, globally recognised Cambridge-accredited Level 5 qualification designed for people with little or no previous English language teaching experience. More people take their CELTA with International House than with any other school group in the world — International House pioneered the course in 1962.

What the Course Involves

The CELTA comprises 120 hours of training and includes:

  • Tutor input covering teaching methodology, lesson planning, language analysis and language skills
  • Observation of experienced teachers in real classroom environments
  • 6 hours of observed and assessed teaching practice with real language students
  • 4 written assignments based on course input
  • Continuous assessment — no final exam

Every course is externally moderated by a Cambridge English assessor, so graduates receive a certificate from Cambridge English, part of the University of Cambridge.

Entry Requirements

  • Minimum age 18
  • Completion of secondary education
  • Advanced English proficiency (C1 or equivalent to IELTS Band 7) — English need not be your first language
