What is the CELTA?

The CELTA is a TEFL qualification which prepares you to teach English as a foreign language. You don’t need any existing English language teaching experience or training. It’s usually a 4 or 5 week full time course (but you can also take it part time). Standing up in front of a class for the first time is a daunting prospect, so you need to make sure you have the skills you need to teach effectively. The CELTA prepares you for the classroom in these ways:
1. Taught sessions on methodology, lesson planning, language analysis and language skills. (In total, you’ll have 120 hours of input.)
2. The opportunity to observe experienced teachers in a real-life language classroom situations – so you can see the different skills and techniques they use.
3. Teaching yourself – with helpful and detailed feedback from your tutors. This practical experience is invaluable when you start your first job.
You’ll also complete a few written assignments, and then you’ll be ready for your first job and your first students.

About the school

IH Prague is large and vibrant school with about 50 English teachers, a large teacher training department, and teachers of German, French, Italian and other languages. It’s a very cosmopolitan environment! Training or working within this long established and supportive team will provide a great boost to your career.

A group of 15 Czech English language teachers opened the school in 1988, and we are proud to still be a cooperative, owned by most of the permanent staff.

IH Prague is conveniently located close to the metro, only 10-minutes’ ride to Wenceslas Square or 20-minutes to Charles Bridge. It is surrounded by a large garden with trees, benches and red squirrels. We also have a library and cafe in an adjoining building. With Prague being such a popular tourist destination, our course participants appreciate being able to live and study in a quiet residential area away from the hustle and bustle of downtown Prague.

If you would like to visit Prague to do your CELTA, the city is safe, cheap and simply beautiful. There are many historical sites to visit, such as Charles Bridge, the Jewish Quarter or the Prague Castle, which are all only about 20 minutes away from the school with the user-friendly public transport.

However, given how busy the CELTA normally keeps people, you might also appreciate places that will help you relax and that can be reached in about 10 minutes. One of these places is Prague’s largest swimming pool called Podolí with outdoor (and indoor) heated pools. There is also a place called Sauna Spot with a range of hot rooms some with views of the Vltava river! Additionally, there are several parks in the neighbourhood as well as a large forest with lots of walking paths.

It’s straightforward to get to Prague – since it’s such a popular destination! Václav Havel International Airport serves as a hub for Czech Airlines and Smartwings, and is also a base for Ryanair. Prague has very good public transport with buses and a metro.

The metro station Budejovicka is five-minute walk from the school, which makes the city centre super easy to reach.  Although central, we are in a very pleasant area with lots of trees and green areas.

Prague school

There are many restaurants and cafés all within a 10-minute walk from the school, including a food court in a shopping mall or a lovely vegan restaurant called Loving Hut. There are three large supermarkets (e.g. Lidl) all within a 10-minute walk from the school. Additionally, there are a couple of local bakeries and a Marks & Spencer café/shop!

To give you an idea of how expensive it is to live in Prague, a kilo of oranges is around €1.40, a Big Mac is around €3.10 and a bottle of beer is around €1.40.

Accommodation

We have three of our own apartments which students may rent. All three apartments are within a walking distance from the school (or a two-minute bus ride). All of them are in quiet streets and with a garden, so they provide ideal study environment. At the same time, it will only take you about 10 minutes into the city centre or other attractive locations. You will have your own room with a bed, a wardrobe, a desk and a chair. The kitchen and the bathroom are shared and equipped with basic kitchen amenities, including a cooker and a washing machine.

If someone prefers to find their own accommodation (or there is no space left in accommodation the school offers), we are happy to give advice in regard to the location to look for, useful web pages or we recommend places where our trainees stayed in the past and had a positive experience with. In Prague the general cost of more budget accommodation starts at 12 Euro per night (hostels, private accommodation, student-shared places).

Tutors at this training centre

Gregor Kalinowski

I was an EFL teacher for 5 years prior to teaching CELTA, and have taught CELTA for about 10 years.

I like surprising students, at least keeping them on their toes, keeping challenge levels high and the focus on dealing with the challenges on the students. This requires flexibility and constant experimentation in lesson planning – each lesson is a kind of problem that requires its own solution. That, for me, is what is most rewarding about teaching

Michal Tatarko

I have worked for 10 years as an EFL teacher, and 5 years as a teacher trainer.

I like those ‘aha!’ moments in the classroom, when my learners realised they wanted to say something and relied on my help to discover the language they needed. Now, I teach my trainees to help learners discover the language rather than explain it to them word by word.

Alžběta Polišenská

I started teaching English in 1996. I trained as a CELTA tutor in 2001 and as a DELTA tutor in 2009.

My advice for establishing a fulfilling career in EFL, I advise finding a teaching environment or context that suits you and that enables you to develop. Read a lot and talk about teaching with those who care. Be inquisitive about language and language learning, keep asking questions and look for answers.

Cathy Bowden

I’ve been an EFL teach since 1996 and a teacher trainer since 2003. Before becoming an EFL teacher, I worked in the Civil Service and in a local post office.

To get the most out of the course, I’d advise you to keep organised: organise your handouts, plan when to do different pieces of coursework, don’t leave things to the last minute and set yourself a target for when to get your plans finished by. Also, try to take at least half an hour each day to do something non-CELTA.

Leona Máslová

I decided I wanted to become a teacher when I was very young, so it has been my whole career. I was an EFL teacher for about 5 years before I became a teacher trainer in 1999. I’ve also done administrative and material writing jobs related to EFL.

To get the most out of the CELTA course, I believe it’s largely about your attitude. If you embrace it with an open mind and focus on what new things you can learn each day, you are more likely to succeed.

Will getting my CELTA at IH Prague actually help me find a teaching job abroad?
Yes, absolutely. Three out of four English language teaching jobs globally require a CELTA qualification, making it the gold standard for TEFL employers. Because it is a qualification from Cambridge Assessment English, your certificate from IH Prague will be highly regarded globally by organizations which employ English language teachers.
Do I need to be a native English speaker or have previous teaching experience to take this course?
You do not need to be a native speaker, nor do you need prior teaching experience to enroll at IH Prague. You simply need a high level of English proficiency to ensure you can effectively teach and complete the coursework. The CELTA is designed as an initial teacher training program, so our tutors will guide you through the teaching fundamentals from day one.
I've heard the CELTA is incredibly intensive; can I work my normal job while studying in Prague?
If you choose our full-time CELTA course at IH Prague, we strongly recommend that you do not work alongside it. The program requires a massive time commitment for daily input sessions, lesson planning, and actual teaching practice. If you need to maintain your employment, we highly suggest exploring part-time or blended course formats to better balance your schedule.
How will I be assessed during the course, and is there a massive final exam I have to pass?
There is no final written exam for the CELTA. Instead, you are continuously assessed throughout your time at IH Prague based on your real-life teaching practice and a series of practical written assignments. Cambridge Assessment English moderates the grading to ensure fairness, meaning your final certificate reflects your consistent progress and practical teaching skills.
