About this Course - DELTA Module 1&2 combined with IH London

DELTA Modules 1 and 2 together cover both the theoretical and practical components of the Cambridge DELTA qualification. Module 1 builds knowledge of language, methodology and resources; Module 2 develops professional teaching practice through observed lessons and coursework. IH London offers multiple formats for candidates wishing to complete both modules.

Module 1 — Understanding Language, Methodology and Resources

Module 1 focuses on extending and developing candidates’ knowledge and understanding of ELT theory in a range of contexts.

  • Different teaching approaches and methodologies
  • Language systems and learners’ linguistic challenges
  • Knowledge of resources, materials and reference sources

Assessment: Two-part written exam (90 minutes each), held in June and December.

Module 2 — Developing Professional Practice

Module 2 focuses on developing awareness and expertise in the principles and professional practice of teaching English. Candidates research and write essays on language systems and skills, plan and teach lessons based on their research, and receive developmental feedback on their teaching.

  • Preparation for teaching and managing student learning
  • Lesson planning, delivery and evaluation
  • Understanding the language learner and the learning context
  • Evaluating, selecting and using resources and materials
  • Observing and evaluating other teachers’ lessons

Assessment: Portfolio of coursework — background essays, four observed lessons (one externally assessed by Cambridge), and a Professional Development Assignment.

About IH London

About the School

IH London opened in 1959. We are the no.1 language school in Central London, judged by the latest British Council inspections and reported in the EL Gazette (2019). Every year we train over 500 new teachers and enable them to embark on exciting new journeys across the globe to inspire and teach others.

IH London was started by John and Brita Haycraft, the founders of IHWO, and its classrooms saw the very first CELTA courses back in the 1960s. The premises is very centrally located in Covent Garden. The centre is now a charitable trust, and is most well-known for English language courses and teacher training. We have, from our beginnings, been a leading contributor in the ELT field and we strive to continue to make a significant contribution to the international language education community.

Nora Musa

I have been a full time EFL teacher since 2003 and a teacher trainer since 2006.
My advice is to always try and continue to learn and refresh / update your skills, be it technology, ideas or techniques. If you are lucky enough to be in a school that has teacher development sessions, opportunities to observe others and to try different contexts, take them. It makes for a more interesting career.
Learn from your students, involve them as much as you can and don’t be afraid to try different things.
