Cambridge Logo

You need at least one year’s experience to make the most of it, although many people take it after a number of year’s experience in the classroom. If you are planning to progress into academic management a DELTA is a very good idea. In some schools it will be a prerequisite.

There are three modules, which you can take in any order.

DELTA Module 2

DELTA Module 2 is “Developing Professional Practice”.  It is assessed with a portfolio of coursework and assessed lesson observations. Topics covered are:

  • The learner and learning context
  • Preparing to teach
  • Using resources and materials in the classroom
  • Managing and supporting learning
  • Evaluating lesson planning
  • Observing lessons
  • Professional development

The other modules

Module 1 is “Understanding Language, Methodology and Resources for Teaching”. This is the examined module, and is primarily theoretical.

Module 3 is independent research on either an ELT specialism or management.  It is assessed by a written dissertation.

DELTA Module 1

DELTA Module 1 is “Understanding Language, Methodology and Resources for Teaching”. This is the examined module, and is primarily theoretical.  Topics are

  • Theory of language acquisition and language teaching
  • Different teaching approaches and methodologies
  • Language systems and linguistic problems
  • Language skills
  • Resources, materials and reference sources for language learning
  • Assessment concepts and terminology

Beacuse this module is examined, some people benefit from additional help with exam preparation and revision. We have an online course exactly for this. See here!

DELTA Module 3

DELTA Module 3 is independent research on either an ELT specialism or management.  It is assessed by a written dissertation

Nora Musa

I have been a full time EFL teacher since 2003 and a teacher trainer since 2006.
My advice is to always try and continue to learn and refresh / update your skills, be it technology, ideas or techniques. If you are lucky enough to be in a school that has teacher development sessions, opportunities to observe others and to try different contexts, take them. It makes for a more interesting career.
Learn from your students, involve them as much as you can and don’t be afraid to try different things.

Frequently Asked Questions

I only have a year of teaching experience and haven't taken Module 1 yet. Am I eligible to start with Module 2 at IH London?
Yes, you can take the three DELTA modules in any order, so you do not need to complete Module 1 first. Cambridge requires at least one year of teaching experience to make the most of the course, though many of our trainees have been in the classroom for several years. Module 2 focuses heavily on developing your professional practice, so having a solid foundation in the classroom is essential.
I struggle with high-pressure exams. How exactly will my work be assessed during Module 2?
Unlike Module 1, which is primarily theoretical and assessed via a written exam, Module 2 does not have a final exam. Instead, your grade is based on a portfolio of coursework and practical, assessed lesson observations. This allows you to demonstrate your teaching development and planning skills in real classroom settings rather than in a test environment.
Will completing my DELTA really help me move out of standard teaching and into academic management?
Absolutely. A DELTA is a prestigious qualification from Cambridge English Assessment that proves your advanced practical and theoretical knowledge. If you are planning to progress into academic management, such as becoming a Director of Studies, a DELTA is highly recommended and is actually a strict prerequisite in many schools.
How will the assessed lesson observations work for my Module 2 portfolio?
Because Module 2 focuses on 'Developing Professional Practice', you will be observed teaching real lessons to demonstrate your skills in managing learning and using resources. At IH London, approved tutors will evaluate your lesson planning, your execution in the classroom, and your ability to evaluate your own teaching. These practical assessments form the core of the portfolio that Cambridge reviews for your final grade.
