Helen McMillan is a CELTA Tutor at IH Bogotá in Colombia
How long were you an EFL teacher, and how long have you been a teacher trainer?
I was an EFL teacher for 20 years.
I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to train up as a CELTA Tutor with IH Bogota in December 2018.
Did you have a different career before EFL?
I worked for 9 years as an Executive Assistant/Translator in international organisations and multinational companies.
What are your hopes/aspirations for your trainees?
I hope that with the knowledge, tools, experience and confidence my trainees will get from the Celta, they will continue to develop as effective teachers and sustain their passion for teaching.
When you were an EFL teacher what did you like most, and how do you bring that into the classroom for your trainees?
The students! And being able to help them achieve their goals and often fulfil their dreams through English.
By listening and adapting to them, by supporting, guiding and encouraging them at all times to make sure they benefit fully from all parts of the course.
What advice would you give your trainees for successfully completing the course?
Try to enjoy it! It’s a wonderful opportunity to learn, practise, share and develop. Keep on top of everything by organising your work, sticking to deadlines and pacing yourself. Make sure you eat and sleep, and do something non-Celta for yourself at least once every weekend.
What advice would you give your trainees for an interesting and rewarding career?
Diversify your teaching; teach different kinds of students/levels and types of English. Don’t forget to continue your own professional development.
