CELTA advice from Peter Redpath

Peter Redpath is a CELTA tutor at IH Santiago de Compsotela in Spain

How long were you an EFL teacher, and how long have you been a teacher trainer?

I’ve been an EFL teacher and a trainer for over 30 years. Before that I was a motorcycle messenger in London, and I even did a stint behind a desk in the City of London.

What are your hopes/aspirations for your trainees?

That they get hooked, as I got hooked, on three big questions:

  1. How does language work?
  2. How do people learn language?
  3. What can I do to create the optimum conditions for this to take place?

When you were an EFL teacher what did you like most, and how do you bring that into the classroom for your trainees?

I still spend most of my time in the classroom teaching adults and younger learners. I like being there and I guess that transmits to the students.

What advice would you give your trainees for successfully completing the course?

  • Have one day at the weekend which is for you to take time out (it’s very intensive).
  • Work with the other trainees.
  • Ask if you’re not sure.

What advice would you give your trainees for an interesting and rewarding career?

Talk to colleagues; learn from students; stay open to change.
