What is the CELTA?

The CELTA is a TEFL qualification which prepares you to teach English as a foreign language. You don’t need any existing English language teaching experience or training. It’s usually a 4 or 5 week full time course (but you can also take it part time).

Standing up in front of a class for the first time is a daunting prospect, so you need to make sure you have the skills you need to teach effectively. The CELTA prepares you for the classroom in these ways:

  • Taught sessions on methodology, lesson planning, language analysis and language skills. (In total, you’ll have 120 hours of input.)
  • The opportunity to observe experienced teachers in a real-life language classroom situations – so you can see the different skills and techniques they use.
  • Teaching yourself – with helpful and detailed feedback from your tutors.  This practical experience is invaluable when you start your first job.

You’ll have to complete some written assignments as well, but when it’s all successfully completed you’ll be ready for your first job and first students!

Study a full time CELTA with IH Madrid, and immerse yourself in learning and the city. This intensive course lasts 4 weeks, with a usual daily pattern of:

  • Mornings from 9:30: Academic input sessions, planning and feedback
  • Afternoons, until 17:30: Teaching practice, observations, and feedback. Teaching practice is a hugely important part of the CELTA, and trainees will teach a group of practice students, with help from their fellow students and the tutor.

Tutor support is a key to enjoying the succeeding on the CELTA, and the tutors from IH Madrid are always on hand and will respond to questions via email or WhatsApp outside course hours, including weekends.

IH Madrid is one of the most experienced CELTA centres in Spain, drawing on a wealth of expertise training new teachers over many years. Tutors constantly update their own professionalism to keep up to date with current best practice on effective teaching practices.

CELTA courses are taught in our modern, air-conditioned centre, right in the heart of Madrid. We have free WIFI throughout the building and a great library to prepare your written work. All our session handouts are digitalised and available online throughout and after the course. We will set up your own Google Drive for easy submission of lesson plans and assignments.

Part Time Face-to-Face CELTA with IH Madrid

If you have other commitments, then a part time course may suit you.

The part time course is Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings, from 9:30 to 13:30. This is still face to face, so you need to come to the centre and be with uour tutors and fellow classmates on these days. You will cover the same curriculum, the same teaching practice and feedback, and have the same tutor support.

The duration of the course is 12 weeks.

Blended CELTA with IH Madrid

If you have more commitments during the week, the blended course gives you even more flexibility. You need to come into the school on Saturday mornings from 10:00 to 14:30 for real face to face teaching practice, and to meet your fellow students, but the rest of the course is studied online, at your own pace. The content is exactly the same, wand the course leads to a full CELTA qualification in exactly the same was as studying face-to-face.

On Thursdays your tutor will call, or arrange a Zoom, to discuss progress and upcoming sessions.

Online study is through interactive tasks, guided video observation and forum discussion. The aim is to develop effective, principled teaching methodologies. An advantage of the online CELTA component is the increased amount of time and support for you to reflect on and develop what you have learnt.

The main benefit of studing online is that  tasks and course materials are always accessible, giving you the flexibility to fit your training around other commitments. You will save time time travelling to and from the centre of the city.

What is special about the CELTA with IH Madrid?

After the course, we give you substantial discounts to further training available through IH Madrid. For example we have courses for teaching young learners, teaching business English, learning Spanish. We also give CELTA alumni access to our own working teachers’ Professional Development Programme.

If you are looking for a job, we regularly recruit from our CELTA courses. Suitable candidates will be considered for our full or part-time work vacancies when we have them.

What will fellow students be like?

CELTA students come from a wide range of backgrounds; from university students on a sabbatical to mature students preparing for a change of career. Many of our groups are multicultural and it is not unusual to have as many as six nationalities in one CELTA group.
