Job Description 

Job Description: EFL Teacher 
Reports to: Managing Director (MD) and Director of Studies (DOS)

Classroom Responsibilities: 

  • Provision of high-standard English language tuition to the relevant levels, using communicative, task-based and other appropriate methodologies. 
  • Use of recommended course books supplemented with additional material selected by the teacher, which is relevant to the course outline, accurate and up-to-date. 
  • Appropriate application of a range of supplementary and audio-visual material, realia and other available resources. 
  • Regular setting and checking of homework. Homework should be set at the end of every lesson and checked at the start of the following lesson, except for written homework which should be taken in by the teacher. Approximate guidelines are below. 

Once-a-week, non-intensive courses 
Non-readers up to Young Learners: 1 hour 
Starters, Movers and Flyers: 1 hour

Exam preparation classes: 1.5 hours 
There may be a need to give more just before exams, for example mock tests. 

Intensive Courses

SHT GE15: 30 mins to 1 hour every day from the workbook as a basic minimum, and extra tasks as appropriate. 

SHT GE25 BE25: 30 mins to 1 hour every day on top of the GE15 homework. 

In the case of examination classes, the selection and use of appropriate practice material, conducting ongoing assessment by setting and marking practice tasks, questions and mock examinations. 

Where applicable, directing students to the online self-study resources that come with their course books.

Other Academic Duties: 
- Marking of individual written homework assignments with positive and constructive feedback that gives students points to focus on. 
- Writing lesson plans, creating materials, downloading, adapting and creating materials that can be added to the IH Bangkok SHT folders consistently wherever appropriate. 
- Maintaining academic profiles of students and completing end-of-course reports.

Administrative Duties: 
- Daily completion of attendance and lesson notes with the date, 
name of the teacher, coursebook, page, main language points and 
activities covered, using whatever systems are in place for doing so. 
- Ensuring that classrooms, school supplies and learning resources are organised and well-maintained. Specifically, returning library books to their correct place on the shelf, and repairing or notifying admin of any missing or damaged resources so that they are repaired before they become unusable. 
- Notifying the DOS or admin of any missing books or resources. 
- Attending and actively participating in staff meetings usually held weekly for 30 minutes during Wednesday lunchtime, having looked at the timetable for the following week, and making certain you know who you are teaching and what materials to use for all of your students. Notices and points about current courses and students will be raised at this time. 
- Liaising with the DOS or MD for Monday morning confirmation of level placement for GE15 Study Holiday (SHT) students , and Monday afternoon for confirmation of RWE or BE students. 
- Liaising with the DOS or MD regarding level or materials assigned to private students. 
- Ensuring that the school’s property and resources provided for the use of the course are used with care and economically, both by himself/herself and by students; specifically, minimising wasted photocopies by checking the correct number of students in the class who have and don’t have the book and only photocopying for those that don’t.

Student Assessment: 
- Carrying out weekly student assessment as set out in the SHT course outlines, and for private students, setting the end of unit progress tests every time a unit is finished. 
- Conducting tutorials with long-term students every 12 weeks. This is the responsibility of whoever is teaching the student at the start of their twelfth week, usually the Monday-Wednesday-Friday teacher of that group. This teacher completes a form with written feedback on the student’s progress, including their speaking and writing performance (using assessment criteria as appropriate). 
- Modification of teaching methods based on student performance and feedback.

Classroom Management: 
- Creating a respectful, positive and inclusive classroom environment. 
Setting, implementing and upholding classroom rules consistently. 
- Wherever possible, ensuring regular attendance, discipline, punctuality and orderly behaviour of the students. 
- Reporting breaches of attendance or poor behaviour to the DOS or MD..

Professional Development: 
- Attending all in-house teacher development sessions, as is compulsory, as part of engagement in continuous learning and professional growth. Attending post-observation and appraisal sessions as directed by the DOS or MD. 
- If appropriate, preparing and leading in-house teacher development sessions. 
- Collaboration with colleagues to share and implement best practices.

Communication and Pastoral Responsibilities: 
- Remaining sensitive to the well-being of staff and students at all times. 
- Responding to student feedback and addressing students’, parents' and guardians' concerns in a timely and empathetic manner. 
- Delivering lessons only on topics appropriate to a classroom, remaining sensitive to cultural differences. 
- Maintaining a positive demeanour and fostering a positive atmosphere at all times. 
- Taking a genuine interest in the academic needs and problems of students. This may require the teacher to communicate with students and parents after lessons.

Other Duties: 
- Adherence to all school policies and regulations. 
- Supervision of class evacuation during fire drills or other emergencies. 
- You will be requested from time to time to carry out additional duties, which are consistent with your position and within your capabilities.

Visa: The school will send the MOE application letter to the employee to apply for an initial 3 month non-immigrant B visa once all teacher paperwork is received and once the teacher has that the school will extend and pay for that visa to be valid for a year and also process and pay for the work permit.

Holiday: There is a total of 5 weeks' paid holiday per year.
