About the teacher training centre
IH Rome Accademia Britannica is right in the heart of Rome, close to the Colosseum, San Giovanni in Laterano and the main railway station (Stazione Termini). If you are interested in exploring Rome, this is a great base.
We started teaching English to local adults and children more than 50 years ago. Our teacher training centre was founded more than 30 years ago mainly to cater to the needs of the local schools. It expanded to become the largest in Italy, in response to the growing demand for training courses in both State schools and private institutions.
IH Rome has been successfully training teachers for over 40 years and our team of six resident trainers have worked in a variety of contexts throughout the world.
Some members of staff have been with the team nearly all that time! Norman, Giovanni, Ian and the whole team, still enjoy welcoming all their English and teacher training students into the school.
Over the years we have helped more than three thousand candidates from all over the world to start their careers in English teaching both in Italy and abroad. And we are looking forward to the next three thousand!

We are professional, welcoming and caring at the same time. Our students’ needs and wellbeing are of paramount importance to us.
Students studying online will have face-to-face classes on Zoom.
When studying face to face, students will have access to our fully equipped Study Centre and its extensive library of materials for lesson planning and reference. We have been a CELTA centre since 1975 and were one of the first centre in the world to run the CELTYL course back in 1997. We have a team of 6 resident trainers and we have trained about 4,500 teachers of EFL so far.
Tutors at this training centre
Giovanni Licata
What do I hope for my trainees? This is a big question! My main hope is that they develop the ability to reflect on their classes and identify strengths and weaknesses of their lesson plans. To me, this is the most important skill to develop on the course as the trainees are with the tutors and their peers only for a limited amount of time. It’s like planting a seed, really.
Ian Nuttall
I hope my CELTA trainees learn how to engage with their students, listen to them and react to their needs. I also hope they develop good self-awareness in teaching practice and learn how to plan effective lessons and provide everyone in the classroom with a quality language learning experience.
Norman Cain
My advice for an interesting and rewarding career in TEFL is to never stop learning, keep a balance between career and life, work for an organisation where you can develop your skills and learn from your relationships with others.
James Egerton
What I (still) like the most about teaching is the amount that I learn from my students thanks to their life experiences and expertise, so I try to treat teaching as a two-way interaction. During a CELTA course, this translates into encouraging genuine interaction between trainee and students. It can be necessary to remind trainees not to leave their humanness at the classroom door, despite any nerves or stress they may be experiencing.
Flo Feast
My hopes and aspirations for people who embark on a TEFL career is that they’ll have the fantastic opportunities to travel as I have, and that they’ll meet many wonderful students and colleagues around the globe.
Chris Jones
My job as a CELTA tutor is to give every trainee teacher on the course the tools, knowledge and skills they need to start their teaching career with confidence and competence. My hope is that they do as I’ve done (and continue to do) – go out into the world to work hard, experience new cultures and meet new people.
DELTA Module 2 student testimonials
The Module 1 course was blended, and this was a great way to prepare for the exam. We had online study groups with weekly tasks which were moderated by trainers, and then met once a week to further explore the material. The IH Manzoni Rome trainers prepared us very well to have success with the exam. Module 2 was also blended, with online tasks which helped us with lesson preparation and reflection. I found Module 2 to be the most challenging of the three, but luckily had a great teaching team, and experienced tutors. The Module 3 extended assignment was a real challenge for me. However, it taught me a great deal. I had an excellent tutor who was able to really get to the heart of what I was trying to present, and without his support, I doubt I would have completed the Module. Completing the Delta has opened professional doors for me. It also led to lasting friendships and professional relationships, for which I will be forever grateful. Jo Gillespie
An intensive but extremely positive learning experience with some of the best experts I have ever met in ELT and who have remained professional points of reference for me ever since. Sophie Bennett
