About the teacher training centre

IH Santiago de Compostela - El Centro Britanico is a well-established and prestigious English language academy located in Santiago de Compostela, a beautiful part of Galicia, Spain.

We started teaching English in 1979 in the centre of Santiago, and later expanded to the nearby suburbs of Milladoiro and Bertamiráns. The team of about 35 teachers and staff deliver teacher training, language clases, exams, and summer camps.

With academic experience built up over forty years, and a dedication to introducing innovative pedagogical techniques, we are proud that our teachers create such good rapport with all their students and enjoy a very positive learning environment.

We believe our location, experience as an English Language institution, employment opportunities, and our passion for teacher training makes us a great choice for a CELTA course.

What is the CELTA?

The CELTA is a TEFL qualification which prepares you to teach English as a foreign language. You don’t need any existing English language teaching experience or training. It’s usually a 4 or 5 week full time course (but you can also take it part time).

Standing up in front of a class for the first time is a daunting prospect, so you need to make sure you have the skills you need to teach effectively. The CELTA prepares you for the classroom in these ways:

  1. Taught sessions on methodology, lesson planning, language analysis and language skills. (In total, you’ll have 120 hours of input.)
  2. The opportunity to observe experienced teachers in a real-life language classroom situations – so you can see the different skills and techniques they use.
  3. Teaching yourself – with helpful and detailed feedback from your tutors.  This practical experience is invaluable when you start your first job.

You’ll have to complete some written assignments as well, but when it’s all successfully completed you’ll be ready for your first job and first students!

What will fellow students be like?

The CELTA candidates’ ages range from 25 to 50, having an average of 30. Some of them may come either from Galicia, Portugal, other Spanish places or abroad.

IH Santiago de Compostela - El Centro Británico interviews the CELTA candidates so they can opt for any available vacancies. Most of them are currently working in some of our three academies.

Tutors at this training centre

Eleanor Spicer-Lundholm

Eleanor has been a teacher of English since 1980, and a Teacher Trainer since 1986.

My hope is that my trainees will become excited about language, that they will absorb the methodology we promote, and will put this methodology into practice in their own individual way. When she teaches her own classes, she enjoys noticing those moments when students begin to understand or unravel elements of language or methodology which they hadn’t understood before.

Peter Redpath

I've been an EFL teacher and a trainer for over 30 years. I got hooked on three big questions – how does language work, how do people learn language, and how can I create the optimum conditions for this to take place? My advice is talk to colleagues; learn from students and stay open to change.
